You dont necessarily have to head to the store to purchase mulch. Though, even the store has a variety of mulch types:

  • Grass Clippings
  • Hardwood Bark
  • Hardwood Chips
  • Composted Leaf Mold
  • Animal Manure
  • Mushroom Compost
  • Peat Moss
  • Pine Boughs
  • Pine Needles
  • Sawdust
  • Sewage Sludge
  • Shredded Leaves
  • Straw

What Makes Good Mulch?

When choosing mulch, it is important to be calculated. These are some of the factors to consider when selecting your mulch:

  • Texture: Fine mulch tends to retain moisture before it gets to tree roots, evaporating on the surface. Coarse material, meanwhile, may be too porous to hold adequate amounts of water.
  • Nutrient Value: Quality mulch provides nutritional value to improve soil structure.
  • Availability: Some mulch types are more available and can even be found for free from your community.
  • Aesthetics: Mulch looks different. Take a look at the options and see which looks best on your property.

Sesmas did a terrific job for us on a project completed today involving the removal of 18 problem trees. Project was completed exactly as promised, skillfully and for a reasonable price. Mike Fowler was excellent in overseeing the work and his crew was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Arvidson

These guys were on point. Verified the request before beginning (always good, because the trees aren't coming back!). Then made sure the trimming was done to exactly where I wanted it. On time, fast, and completely cleaned up after - was a great experience. Highly recommend!

The benefits of mulch are many. We wont dive too deeply into the specifics, but here are some of the advantages of using mulch:

  • Insulation: Mulch can protect your trees roots from extreme temperatures, keeping soil warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
  • Conserve Moisture: Good mulch will protect your soil from the heat of the sun and its evaporative properties. Keep your soils moisture from evaporating with quality mulch.
  • Improve Soil Structure: Organic mulch especially provides nitrogen and phosphorous into your soil.
  • Prevent Erosion: Bare soil is susceptible to rain and sprinkles dispersing it. Mulch protects your soil from erosion and water runoff.
  • Protection from Lawnmower: Mowing the lawn can sometimes damage roots that are near or peak onto the surface. A layer of mulch can prevent that.

Risks of Mulch

Mulch, especially if improperly laid, can pose risks as well. Nonporous mulch creates a barrier against oxygen and water. Too much mulch or fine-textured mulch can even drown your soil with too much moisture. If you are not careful, you might end up choosing a mulch type that harbors weed seeds, infesting your lawn with invasive weeds.
