What Soil is Right for My New Tree?

If you are planning to add some curb appeal to your home by planting new trees, you need to be careful about what kind of soil you are going to use to make sure your tree gets all the nutrients it needs. Here are the 4 main types of tree soil:

  • Clay

Clay soil is a denser soil that is very rich in nutrients that your trees need. They offer low water drainage, meaning you may experience overwatering. The texture of clay soil is smooth when dry, and sticky when wet.

  • Silt

This kind of soil is on the rare side, and the texture can be described as soapy without being chunky. The particles in this soil are much larger than clay particles, allowing silt soil to retain water easily. This is one of the most fertile soils you can use for any kind of tree.

  • Chalk

Chalky soil can either be heavy or very lightweight. Being a mixture of alkaline and calcium carbonate, this soil isn’t the most nutrient-rich. Depending on the type of tree you are planting, chalky soil may not be enough for it.

I absolutely love the work ethic displayed by Sesmas employees. They work hard and fast! My property looks amazing! This is the second time in 5 years that I have used their services and customer satisfaction is still at the top of their list.

Evita Fikes

Sesmas did a terrific job for us on a project completed today involving the removal of 18 problem trees. Project was completed exactly as promised, skillfully and for a reasonable price. Mike Fowler was excellent in overseeing the work and his crew was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Arvidson

These guys were on point. Verified the request before beginning (always good, because the trees aren't coming back!). Then made sure the trimming was done to exactly where I wanted it. On time, fast, and completely cleaned up after - was a great experience. Highly recommend!

  • Loamy

Being a mixture of sand, silt, and clay particles, loamy soil is very fertile and drains water the way soil should. This is the most affordable solution when talking about soil types, while also giving your trees the exact nutrients they need to grow long and strong.
