Choosing the Right Space to Plant a Tree

Trees are wonderful additions to any landscape, but there is a caveat: they must be properly planted. An appropriately selected and planted tree can add value to your property, provide fruits, clean your air, and more. Planting trees haphazardly, however, can cause massive headaches for reasons we will go into later in this article. At Sesmas Tree Service, we enjoy helping our community make the most of their yards. If you are preparing to plant a tree, then be sure to choose the right space for the tree.

Choosing the Right Tree

Yes, we are writing about choosing the right space, but it is equally important to choose the right tree first. What is the function of the tree you plan to plant? Are you looking for a tree to add colors to your yard? Do you want to literally enjoy the fruits of your labor? Is your yard in need of some shade or privacy?

Thoroughly research the types of trees and their drawbacks. For example, if you are looking for shade, will you choose a deciduous tree or an evergreen? Deciduous trees will provide a calming shade during the spring and summer but lose their leaves in the fall. The bare tree in the fall and winter will allow the winter sun to heat your home. Evergreens, meanwhile, provide shade and privacy year-round thanks to its dense foliage that is, well, ever green.

Sesmas did a terrific job for us on a project completed today involving the removal of 18 problem trees. Project was completed exactly as promised, skillfully and for a reasonable price. Mike Fowler was excellent in overseeing the work and his crew was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Arvidson

These guys were on point. Verified the request before beginning (always good, because the trees aren't coming back!). Then made sure the trimming was done to exactly where I wanted it. On time, fast, and completely cleaned up after - was a great experience. Highly recommend!

If you have thoroughly researched the tree of choice, then you should have an easier time selecting the right location. Here are some factors to think about:

  • The Size of The Tree: Investigate the potential and expected height and width of the tree at maturity. You do not want a tree to obstruct views, contact utility lines, intrude on private property, or hang over your roof. When considering size, be sure to also study its root system as invasive and aggressive tree roots can penetrate pipes and your buildings structure.
  • Shedding and Litter: Lush green leaves that change colors during the fall are wonderful but remember that those leaves will fall. These leaves and other falling debris can clutter swimming pools and ponds. They can also clog gutters and other waterways. Fruit trees, meanwhile, can attract animals, insects, and other pests that may find their way inside your property.
  • Digging Carefully: There is a host of gas, electric, water, and sewer lines running through under your yard. Contact your utility company to identify and mark these locations so that you do not cause harm to yourself or the lines.
