How Do You Know When Its Time to Remove a Tree?

At Sesmas Tree Service, we appreciate trees and all of what they provide for our species and the environment. That is why we have devoted ourselves to servicing and caring for trees from their inception to their death. We prefer to exhaust every option before resorting to removing a tree, especially if the tree is healthy. Still, we know that sometimes a tree removal is necessary. What are these instances when its time to remove a tree? This is exactly the question that we intend to answer in this article. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to hire an ISA-certified arborist, then call Sesmas Tree Service to get in touch with a friendly professional.

Just like humans, a tree can become diseased. There are plenty of options to cure diseased trees, but extensively diseased trees are often at a point of no return. How do you know if the disease or decay has reached the level at which the tree is unlikely to recover? Here are some signs to look for:

  • Compromised Trunk: Cracks, splits, wounds, and dead branch stubs are red flags. A rotted and hollow tree trunk is also unsafe and likely unhealthy.
  • Sprouts: Epicormic shoots, or sprouts at the base of a tree, indicate that the tree is seriously stressed.
  • Dead Branches: Its normal for a few branches to die throughout the life of a tree, but if over half of the tree is dead or damaged, then it is probably time to remove the tree.
  • Root Defects: Roots are vital for the tree but they are difficult to replace. Heaving soil and fungi near the tree base are signs of root issues that can spell trouble.

The Tree Is A Safety Hazard

Trees and even their branches are surprisingly heavy with enough weight to crush roofs, vehicles, and even passersby. This is why we recommend that property owners trim branches before they can get into a position to damage property and harm pedestrians. Sometimes, the tree itself can lean. Though slight leaning is okay, a sudden and significant angle is a strong sign that the tree is a danger. Have an arborist inspect such trees as soon as possible. Any damage caused by a falling tree or branch is ultimately the property owners responsibility.

I absolutely love the work ethic displayed by Sesmas employees. They work hard and fast! My property looks amazing! This is the second time in 5 years that I have used their services and customer satisfaction is still at the top of their list.

Evita Fikes

Sesmas did a terrific job for us on a project completed today involving the removal of 18 problem trees. Project was completed exactly as promised, skillfully and for a reasonable price. Mike Fowler was excellent in overseeing the work and his crew was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Arvidson

These guys were on point. Verified the request before beginning (always good, because the trees aren't coming back!). Then made sure the trimming was done to exactly where I wanted it. On time, fast, and completely cleaned up after - was a great experience. Highly recommend!

As we mentioned earlier, we like to exhaust every option before removing a tree. But the property is yours and some property owners like to renovate their yard. Sometimes a tree can prevent sunlight from reaching other plants and even the windows of your building. Our arborists are happy to help you review alternatives to removing the tree. Such options include trimming or relocating the tree if possible. Still, the decision is ultimately yours and we are here to help. Call Sesmas Tree Service to consult with a professional and review your options. Our representatives are ready to take your call.
