How to Help Your Tree Recover from a flood?

Trees come in all shapes and sizes. They vary in many aspects including the sort of environment that they thrive in and the ones they struggle in. Sycamores, pawpaw trees, and swamp magnolia, for example, flourish in swampy, wet locations. Other trees would suffer severely if inundated with so much water. If you have trees that are made for normal soil conditions, then a flood can cause them distress. In this article, Sesmas Tree Service will review some ways to help your waterlogged trees.

Symptoms of Waterlogged Trees

Flooding is not the only cause of waterlogging. Over-watering your trees can also cause these symptoms:

  • Yellow or brown edges on leaves.
  • Wilting or drooping leaves.
  • Brittle green leaves.
  • New leaves are light green or yellow.

It can be difficult to diagnose a tree for waterlogging because the symptoms for underwatered trees are similar. If there has been a flood recently or if the soil is incredibly soggy, then the cause of these symptoms is pretty obvious. You will also likely notice mushroom, algae, or moss if excess moisture is the problem.

Sesmas did a terrific job for us on a project completed today involving the removal of 18 problem trees. Project was completed exactly as promised, skillfully and for a reasonable price. Mike Fowler was excellent in overseeing the work and his crew was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Arvidson

These guys were on point. Verified the request before beginning (always good, because the trees aren't coming back!). Then made sure the trimming was done to exactly where I wanted it. On time, fast, and completely cleaned up after - was a great experience. Highly recommend!

Many tree owners think that water and sunlight are the only two necessities of a tree, but trees need other nutrients as well as oxygen, too. Too much of anything is a bad thing. When trees get too much water, their roots are unable to draw oxygen and will drown. And without a healthy root system, your tree will not get its necessary nutrients or support, leading to its demise.

So, dont overwater your trees and take preventative measures to avoid flooding. And be sure to call Sesmas Tree Service if you want an expert opinion or assistance.

Recovering Your Tree from A Flood

Put your safety before anything else. Do not rush to protect your tree during a storm or flood. Instead, wait until the weather clears before going outside. Also, make sure that there are no loose electrical wires. Once it has cleared, head out to assess damage and document everything by taking photos and videos. These will be important for the property insurance claim process.

Next, remove debris, excess soil, and mulch from around plants and trees to help them breathe. Check for areas on your property that are not draining well and see if you can direct the water away from trees.

Finally, look for broken branches and remove them if they can be reached safely from the ground. However, we urge you to put safety first. If you can, call a professional to take care of branches, bark, and trees in general. In fact, you should certainly call a professional if you notice any leaning trees. The experts at Sesmas Tree Service are always happy to help.
