Winter Tree Pruning

If you have a beautiful dogwood, tulip, oak, maple or any other tree on your property, then we know that you want it to stay as presentable as possible. Trees provide fresh air, shade, fruits, and aesthetics, all potentially increasing the curb appeal and consequently the value of your property. Well-placed and well-maintained trees catch the eyes of guests and potential homebuyers. On the contrary, unhealthy and unwieldy trees can repel them. Tree pruning is necessary to keep your trees in great shape and health, and there is no better time to get this job done than during the winter when trees are dormant. Sesmas Tree Service knows a thing or two about tree pruning and we are here to give you some tips on winter tree pruning.

Tree branches are something like the roads of the tree. Nutrients, water, and energy travel through the branches to get to and from the leaves, roots, and trunk of the tree. If branches are diseased, decaying, or dead, though, they are not much good. In fact, those branches can absorb nutrients that would otherwise be used for good. Tree trimming is the removal of dead, dying, and diseased branches to promote the overall health of the tree.

Pruning is also beneficial for surrounding plants and trees. If a tree is too dense, then it will prevent sunlight from reaching plants, trees, and vegetation behind the tree. Dense trees also prevent airflow, another necessity for healthy tree growth.

Finally, beauty. Trees and shrubs serve functional purposes, but they are also aesthetic fixtures for yards and landscapes. A disheveled tree is not a pleasant sight, though. Pruning helps enhance the appearance of the property by giving the trees a haircut.

Sesmas did a terrific job for us on a project completed today involving the removal of 18 problem trees. Project was completed exactly as promised, skillfully and for a reasonable price. Mike Fowler was excellent in overseeing the work and his crew was outstanding. Highly recommend!

Kathryn Arvidson

These guys were on point. Verified the request before beginning (always good, because the trees aren't coming back!). Then made sure the trimming was done to exactly where I wanted it. On time, fast, and completely cleaned up after - was a great experience. Highly recommend!

You can prune your trees any time of the year but pruning during winter is the most popular. We recommend pruning during the winter because of a few reasons.

First, winter is when trees enter dormancy. There are no leaves to manufacture sugar in the winter, thus pruning does not interfere in the trees growth. In fact, pruning in the winter promotes a vigorous burst of growth in the remaining, healthy branches once spring rolls around.

Secondly, winter pruning can help manage insects and disease. Open wounds are where insects and diseases strike from, and pruning creates a lot of wounds. Pruning when these insects and diseases are inactive reduces the risk of infestation and infection. Though there are some that are active during the winter, insects and diseases are most prevalent during the spring and summer months.
